Science-Based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips
The STRIPS project
Imagine farmland that not only produces abundant crops but also prevents soil erosion, and provides habitat for pollinators and wildlife. The STRIPS project (Science-based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips) is bringing this vision to life across the Midwest.
A win-win for farmers and wildlife
Research shows that by converting 10% of a crop field to diverse, native perennial vegetation, farmers and landowners can reduce sediment movement off their field by 95% and total phosphorus and nitrogen lost through runoff by 90% and 85%, respectively. Prairie strips provide a win-win scenario for farmers and wildlife.
What began as a research initiative in Iowa has now expanded to farms throughout the region, demonstrating how small changes can yield significant environmental benefits without compromising agricultural productivity, and that conservation and agriculture can work hand-in-hand to create resilient, sustainable landscapes for future generations.
